Michael Fassbender To Play Celtic Warrior Cuchulain in 'Irish Myths'

Fassbender teams with Public Enemies screenwriter for adaptation of an ancient Irish myth.

German born Irish actor Michael Fassbender and Irish born Public Enemies screenwriter Ronan Bennett are developing a new feature film about Cuchulain, a legendary Celtic Warrior. Fassbender is set for the leading role and the working title the project is going by right now is 'Irish Myths'. There's an awful lot about this epic ancient Irish legend I don't know so instead of trying to blag it like a fool, I'm going to just let Variety tell you what it is about; "Cuchulain is the central character in the Ulster Cycle, an epic series of Old Irish legends that date from around the 8th century." "Set in the northern part of Ireland, the saga relates the story of the Ulaid tribe headed by King Conchobar, and particularly its conflict with the rival Connachta tribe led by Queen Mebh." "The most prominent figure in the legends is Conchobar's nephew Cuchulain, who has semi-divine ancestry and superhuman fighting skills. In the most famous story, known as the Cattle Raid of Cooley, he is the only man capable of resisting the vast army sent by Medb to steal Conchobar's prize white bull." This very much sounds like a personal project for the Irish pair, who have managed to develop funding for the low-budget film through their London-based shingle Finn McCool films. Although very much in-demand and an actor whose raising stakes in Hollywood are growing rapidly with each feature, Fassbender has still found himself overlooked for a majority of roles at top studios recently. Steven Soderbergh wanted his Haywire actor to co-lead his reboot of 60's spy TV show The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - Warner Bros said they wanted a bigger name. Darren Aronofsky wanted him for his ambitious Noah's Ark epic, but New Regency/Paramount said they wanted a bigger name to secure a return on their $100 million investment and Russell Crowe looks like has landed that gig. I mean don't get me wrong, Fassbender will be getting dozens of offers for movies every week. And he could do a 'This Means War' type Tom Hardy pay-gig whenever he wants but despite appearing in X-Men: First Class, the forthcoming Prometheus and getting awards recognition for his work in this year's Shame, he still isn't seen at that Christian Bale type level yet. But he'll get there. The only movie on his slate to go into production this year is Twelve Years A Slave, another collaboration with his Hunger and Shame director Steve McQueen. And as Fox were slow getting X-Men: First Class sequel off the ground as they dilly-dallied over whether to make that or an X-Men 4 (which still might happen down the line) Fassbender is looking for something good to star in and it looks like he is taking it upon himself to do something himself. Good on him. No word on who will direct the movie or when it is likely to film, but we do know Fassbender is desperately wanted by Ridley Scott again to star in his next movie The Counselor, based on No Country For Old Men author Cormac McCarthy's first screenplay that reportedly begins shooting May 1st.
