10. The Origin Sequence

At the very beginning of the movie, we find Hanzo and his son going about their daily lives - warm family feelings, foreshadowing lessons, games- until it's time to go back to the village. Everything is strangely silent and cold, Scorpion knows something is wrong, then the Lin Kuei come after them and the fun begins.

The first kill in the whole movie is Hanzo blocking the assassin's knife with the lid of a container, sending it spinning in the air just for the flair, stabbing it on his head and then slashing upwards, splitting both the Lin Kuei's head and the lid, all while holding his son.

Then more Kombat ensues as we see the first X-ray, a thrust of a dagger through a cheek, breaking teeth and jaw, even knocking out eyes. This is the magic of 2D animation, the exaggeration and creative freedom you get when using it.

After more action, Hanzo finally finds the body of his wife. As his son cries, we see something snap in him, and just as the music kicks in, more Lin Kuei appear, giving us an awesome scene of Hanzo going berserk and turning around as we see an assassin's terrified face on his sword, the screen around him turning red.

Later he is confronted by Sub-Zero, who ruthlessly murders his son in front of him before killing Hanzo.

What a great way of introducing what's to come, and reassuring fans that they will not be shying away from head-splitting, blood-spilling, and bone-breaking in great detail.
