20 Most Underrated Horror Movies EVER

12. The Collector

2009's home invasion horror The Collector may have started life as a potential Saw prequel, but the final film is very much a tight, suspenseful little yarn entirely on its own merits.

Above all else, the setup is fantastic - a dude (Josh Stewart) decides to rob a house only to find that a serial killer known as The Collector (Juan Fernández) has already broken in and rigged the joint with traps.

Co-writer and director Marcus Dunstan plants his film at a fascinating intersection point between Home Alone and Saw, conjuring up a fascinatingly mysterious antagonist, a whole ton of agonising suspense, and the clear makings of a wider franchise.

While critics of the time couldn't necessarily disentangle The Collector from the glut of soulless "torture porn" horrors dominating the genre at the time, it had a good deal more to offer than mere gore for gore's sake.

And though we did get one good sequel, The Collection, in 2012, a planned threequel, The Collected, infuriatingly had its production shut down mere days after shooting started in 2019 due to behind-the-scenes issues.
