3. Merritt Wever

Unlike most actors on this list, Merritt Wever at least has some award recognition under her belt, thanks primarily to her charming supporting role in the sitcom Nurse Jackie, but otherwise she feels decidedly undervalued by both critics and audiences. 

Never content staying stuck in place, Wever has spent her entire career keeping audiences on their toes. She's been sweet and lovable in Nurse Jackie and New Girl, but she's also been tough and uncompromising in the brutal western miniseries Godless, and outright tragic in the true-life drama Unbelievable. 

Like so many of our best actors, Wever's talent comes from being relatively unassuming; the characters she plays are often more than meets the eye, like her timid but ultimately strong-willed turn as a doomed survivor in The Walking Dead, or her conflicted performance in the recent sports drama Christy. 

A chameleon-like actress who enters every role with the same commitment, Merritt Wever has won some awards, and been in some big hits... but her name isn't nearly as well-known as it should be.
