19. Dr. Mann – Interstellar

The third act of Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic Interstellar features a surprise supporting appearance from prolific cameo-maker Matt Damon, who plays Dr. Mann - the third and final scientist who claims to have found a potentially habitable Earth for humanity's relocation.

But once Coop (Matthew McConaughey) and the crew of the Endurance rouse Mann from cryostasis, it's soon enough revealed that he falsified the data in the hope of being rescued.

He subsequently attempts to kill Coop and escape the planet, though is himself killed during a failed docking procedure.

And just about everyone saw this coming, considering that Damon wasn't featured in any of the film's marketing, implying a degree of secrecy over the nature of his role - and what could merit more secrecy than a surprise villain turn?

It just wouldn't have made a ton of sense to have an A-lister like Damon play a relatively minor scientist character in one of the biggest sci-fi films of the 2010s. Of course there was more to his character than that.
