Fresh off the success of his $152 million worldwide ensemble comedy "Tower Heist", Ben Stiller is back with another team of comedians to alleviate the leading man pressure off of him for his summer 2012 effort. The movie is "Neighborhood Watch", an original summer tentpole that teams Stiller with Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and yes, the somewhat out of place Richard Ayoade, for a high concept, sci-fi comedy that could end up being the surprise gem of this year. You wouldn't guess it from the trailer that is actually a funny skit on a gang driving down the suburban 'hood with "Still D.R.E" blasting from the speakers that seems to hint at some kind of wacky comedy farce akin to "The Other Guys" or something, but the word is this one ends up dealing with aliens. Originally scripted by Mr. Poppers Penguins writer Jared Stern, the movie revolves around a neighborhood watch group that actually acts as a ruse for some free male-bonding time for dads away from their families. It was originally meant as a Will Ferrell vehicle but somewhere during the development at Fox when David Dobkin and Shawn Levy both pulled out of directing it, the Superbad and Green Hornet scribes Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg got their hands on the script and added a plot that revolved around the group stumbling across an alien threat that plans to wipe out the world. As I say you wouldn't guess it from the trailer but you have to imagine Fox will have to get round to showing that sometime but this is just a tease for now; Directed by Hot Rod helmer Alex Schaffer, the actual poster for the movie is much less shy about its sci-fi happenings; Vaughn, Stiller, Hill and Ayoade? I love all those guys work individually but will they have that chemistry that helped sci-fi comedies like Ghostbusters work so well? That we won't find out until July 27th when this one rolls into cinemas.
