Strange Harvest was one of last year's most buzzed-about horror films, having drummed up considerable hype from film festival screenings.

And while this strategy often translates into box office dynamite, it sadly didn't in the case of this terrific horror mockumentary about the re-emergence of a masked serial killer.

Even with the trailer going viral and the film being consistently talked about in horror circles, its final box office gross was a mere $391,173 after opening to an atrocious $278-per-theater average.

There are a few factors to point to here - for one, it didn't have an international theatrical release at all, and it's also fair to say that mockumentaries tend to struggle at the box office, even those with a heightened genre throughline like Strange Harvest.

Even accepting that the budget clearly wasn't high and most interested parties likely caught it on streaming, this seemed like an acclaimed horror film destined to become a low-key breakout at the speciality box office, but it never happened.
