Next Ghostbusters Film Is Coming In 2019 Or 2020

If you think back really hard, you'll remember a time - not even that long ago - when Sony were insisting that Ghostbusters could be as big an IP for them as the MCU was for Marvel. They might not have explicitly said it out loud but their actions spoke volumes: they had the reboot with the female cast, they had an upcoming animated movie and a spin-off possibly coming with Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum.

Sadly, the reboot tanked - for various reasons, but mostly because it just plain wasn't very good - and the exciting sounding spin-off went the same way as the sequel the ending teased. Silently in the night with no trace. Whether either will be revived remains to be seen, but there's definitely still money in the franchise, and neither the live action franchise or the animation are wholly dead.

Luckily, Ivan Reitman still knows what's up, and he's spoken to io9 about what the studio does next with the property. While promoting Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring, he offered the following update:

“We jumped into an animated film [after the last movie] and we are developing live-action films. I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that.”

Apparently, the animated movie will hit cinemas in either 2019 or 2020 but "it depends on on how fast we can get it all together... it’s hard to make an animated film.” He's less forthcoming about the live action movies that might happen, but he still refuses to throw the reboot or Paul Feig's work on the bonfire, even as he hints that he might have done other things:

“We certainly would’ve loved to have a larger hit. But considering the last film was almost 30 years ago, it really did extremely well. I think the film cost too much, frankly, and that’s the real issue. I personally had other points of view in terms of where the film should go and it was kind of a continuous conversation with Paul [Feig] about that. But Paul was the filmmaker on this one and he’s a very talented director. I wanted to give him enough room to do the film he thought it should be.”

He still hasn’t given up on more Ghostbusters stuff, which is still a good idea, even if there are probably a certain selection of fans already sharpening their pitchforks. Just, please, Mr Reitman, get your priorities right: make it scary, make it funny (but in the same straight sort of way the originals were) and don't over-rely on goofy, day-glo special effects. That's what got us all into this mess in the first place.
