Nick Nolte: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

By Shaun Davis /

3. Jack Cates - 48 Hrs.

Rightly cited as being the first - and let's face it, best - buddy cop movie to grace our screens, 48 Hrs. is that rare thing: a film that excites and spawns laughter in equal measure. Breakout star Eddie Murphy may have got all the best lines, but it's Nolte that has the toughest job, making a character like slightly bigoted cop Jack Cates both likeable and also funny. Nolte is clearly having a good time in this movie and special mention should also go to director Walter Hill, who by his own admission was rewriting the character of Cate's on a daily basis during filming in order to ensure the character aligned with Nolte's own personality.
