One Mind Blowing Secret From Every MCU Movie

22. Sony & Marvel's Licensing Agreement - Spider-Man: Homecoming

As said before, Marvel Studios being able to bring Spider-Man into the MCU was one of the biggest developments in the history of the franchise, but it was not so simple as the rights to the Web-head moving back to Marvel, as has happened with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four since Disney acquired Fox.

Marvel and Sony produce the movies together, with distribution falling to the latter, while the character is still able to rock up in other properties such as Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

There are rules that Marvel Studios were strictly to follow, though, imposed by Sony so as to protect their character. Of course, Spider-Man is one of the biggest, if not the biggest superhero property on the planet, and Sony wish to remain firmly in the driving seat. However, while some of the restrictions are understandable, and not exactly surprising, others are more close-minded and oppressive.

According The Reign of Marvel Studios, the 71-page agreement lists which aspects of Spider-Man comics and his powers could be used, as well as a laundry list of details about the specific character of Peter Parker. He is not allowed to torture, smoke tobacco, or have sex before the age of 16, while his background of a heterosexual Caucasian man raised in Queens, New York has to remain.
