1. Snubbed: Won't You Be My Neighbor? & Three Identical Strangers For Best Documentary

Much like Best Foreign Language Film, the documentary category frequently ends up snubbing popular documentaries for no discernible reason.

The big casualties this year were the universally-acclaimed Fred Rogers documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor? and the riveting Three Identical Strangers.

Both received rave reviews pretty much across the board and seemed like sure bets for Best Documentary Film nods, but both ended up missing out.

In addition to the expected Free Solo, Minding the Gap and RBG being nominated, Hale County This Morning This Evening and Of Fathers and Sons also made the cut.

The latter is an especially odd choice as it's not had the critical momentum of the aforementioned snubbed films, but the Academy's documentary branch clearly saw something in it over these more mainstream docs.

As frustrating as this year's abundance of snubs is, the slate of nominees certainly wasn't all bad. Here's everything the Academy got really right...
