4. The Diverse Technical Nominations

The crafts nominations were a surprisingly widespread bunch this year, with a couple of slots ending filled up by foreign language films.

The Best Cinematography field, for instance, had three non-English speaking nominees in Cold War, Never Look Away and Roma, while Swedish fantasy film Border - which didn't even make the nine-film Best Foreign Film shortlist - scored a Best Makeup & Hairstyling nod.

Though much of this year's ceremony felt like Academy voters taking a few steps back, it was at least encouraging to see them voting more adventurously in the technical categories.
