Oscars 2016: 20 Biggest Best Film Contenders

9. Room

Lenny Abrahamson, previously best known for directing Michael Fassbender in oddball comedy Frank, has been attracting rave critical notices for the harrowing drama Room. Brie Larson stars as Ma, who has been shielding her son (Jacob Tremblay) from the reality of the single room in which they live. The film made its world premiere at the Telluride Festival in September and Larson has since dominated the conversation for the Best Actress prize. Room, with its incredibly tough subject matter, seems like a prime candidate for a Best Picture nod at the Academy Awards. Larson's status as the frontrunner for Best Actress makes it even more likely that it will make an appearance on the ballot and it could well be joined by a directorial nomination for Abrahamson.
