A non-political comparison that was made for the La La Land/Moonlight screw up was the recent Super Bowl between the Falcons and the Patriots.

The Falcons had a huge lead, and basically had one hand on the trophy. Then, in a huge upset, the Patriots somehow staged a ridiculous comeback to claim victory.
