Warren Beatty played a central role in the controversy, given he's the man who opened up the envelope that wrongly named La La Land winner.

However, Beatty's reaction is the first sign that something wasn't right. He checks the card about three times, looking very unsure, and then lets Faye Dunaway read out the name.

Of course, it became clear that it wasn't their fault, because the envelope was for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which Emma Stone won - hence they went with La La Land as Best Picture winner.
