The list for this category was whittled down to just 15 last month, but that doesn't make the competition any easier. Brett Morgan's Jane, the story of Jane Goodall's groundbreaking research into chimpanzees, mixes new interviews with archive footage and has been a strong contender for months now.

Likewise Faces Places, which comes from the legendary Agnes Varda and French artist JR, has been getting a lot of love since winning the top documentary prize at Cannes last year. City of Ghosts is another that's been in the mix a long time, with a powerful subject and a risky approach. Outside those, Last Men in Aleppo and Strong Island showcase strong filmmaking about difficult subjects, and Chasing Coral is a different option for voters to consider.
