7. Alfonso Cuarón Makes History With Best Cinematography Win

ABC & AMPAS

It certainly wasn't a surprise that Alfonso Cuarón won the Best Cinematography Oscar for his incredible lensing on Roma, but it did mark a unique achievement in the field of cinematography, because it's the first time a director has ever been nominated for the Oscar, let alone won it, for working as the DP on their own film.

If nothing else it's yet another incredible testament to Cuaron's immensely multi-faceted talents, now having Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Cinematography Oscars to his name.

He "only" needs Best Picture and a screenplay win to complete the set, and given his status as an awards darling, it's probably just a matter of time.
