Oscars 2022: All 20 Actors Who Could Get Their First Oscar Nomination
20. Jodie Comer - The Last Duel
Ridley Scott's new historical epic The Last Duel is jam-packed with quality performances, though none better than Jodie Comer, who brings righteous fury to the role of rape victim Marguerite de Carrouges.
The genius of the film's Rashomon-structure means that Marguerite is more of a passive figure in the first two acts, as we observe her actions through the eyes of her husband Sir Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and her alleged rapist, Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver).
But the third act shifts to show the perspective also implied to be true - Marguerite's. At this point rising star Comer is given the floor to deliver a powerful acting masterclass capturing the anguish of a woman fighting to have her accusations taken seriously amid a toxic patriarchy.
She's easily the strongest part of the ensemble, brilliantly skewering the convention of the stereotypically passive screen wife.
Audiences and critics alike love her, and respect for the film is high despite its weak box office, so don't be shocked if Comer racks up her first Best Actress nod as a result.
