18. Redux Redux

Tired thought we might all be of multiverses at this point, Redux Redux gets a lot of credit for offering up one of the most savagely original sci-fi thriller setups of recent years.

The McManus Brothers' new film centres around a woman, Irene (Michaela McManus), whose young daughter is murdered by a serial killer, prompting her to obsessively travel through parallel universes and repeatedly kill him, amid the belief that her daughter might still be alive in one.

For starters, Redux Redux's wild setup allows its filmmakers to examine well-trod themes such as grief and the futility of revenge through an entirely new lens.

It also doesn't hurt that their sister Michaela McManus gives a barnstorming performance in the lead role, of a woman lost down a near-literal rabbit-hole of vengeance, ensuring the achingly human core of its twisted sci-fi premise is mined for every drop.

This is truly one of those rare off-the-wall movie concepts that probably left thousands of genre filmmakers wishing they came up with it first.
