Pete's Dragon Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
1. The CGI Could Be Better
Now, nobody's expecting miracles given that Pete's Dragon is budgeted at a fairly modest $65 million, but it's surprising how underwhelming the movie's visual effects are, especially considering how integral to the movie they undeniably are.
That's not to say that Elliott is an abominable-looking creature, but merely that he looks pretty cheap and unremarkable a lot of the time, especially when he's on the ground and featured in a lot of close-up shots.
Given that the audience really needs to buy into the relationship between Pete and Elliott, Disney might've been wise to spend some more money on beefing up the effects, because they're definitely mediocre at times. The flying scenes, however, look undeniably glorious.
