Pixar's Brave gets a new full trailer, which remains elusive over its narrative, but suggests a prevalent sense of humour. The film€™s plot is still mostly under wraps, but what is known is that it follows the story of a Scottish Princess, Merida, and her quest to find her own path in life, against the age-old customs of the land, which leads to chaos in the kingdom. It is the studio€™s first original film since Up in 2009, and from this trailer, looks to be a return to be another potential home-run. It will also be the studio€™s first film with a female lead, which, with the success of The Hunger Games, and Prometheus and Snow White and the Huntsman on the horizon, will hopefully help to continue the shift towards more diverse storytelling in the Hollywood system. What is disappointing, however, is how uneven Pixar€™s marketing for the film has been up to this point, and this trailer leans much more heavily on the comedy aspects than the dramatic ones. Although they are managing to keep a lid on the actual plot details, there is a sense that the studio is not fully confident about this effort. While Pixar films have always demonstrated a playful sense of humour, this is employed in service of a strong narrative and well-developed characters, and by all but hiding Brave€™s own core elements makes it harder to get onboard. Watch the trailer below or at YouTube. http://youtu.be/SVKwKhqin0Y Brave has had to contend with production problems, losing original director Brenda Chapman to creative disagreements in 2010 after working on the project for two years, to be replaced by Mark Andrews. It also lost original actress Reese Witherspoon as the voice of Merida due to scheduling conflicts, although casting Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald could be easily argued as the better choice for the lead. The studio€™s most recent effort, Cars 2, was their weakest critical effort, with 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it still brought in almost $560 million for the company, more than Wall-E and the original Cars. With the announcement today of new details on at least three new original projects, the studio shows no sign of slowing down yet, so the hope remains that Brave€™s marketing has simply underestimated another fine example of their grasp of storytelling. Brave will be released on June 22nd, and also stars Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson and Robbie Coltrane.
