At What Point Do You Think Johnny Depp's Career Started To Fall Apart?

Let's face it: it's not going brilliantly right now.

It's probably safe to say that Johnny Depp does not enjoy the same levels of popularity that he did around a decade ago. Granted, the actor hit the height of his popularity after he was launched to worldwide fame in the first movie in Disney's ever expanding Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, playing Captain Jack Sparrow, a rum-obsessed pirate with morality issues who seems to be channelling Keith Richards. In recent years, though, Depp seems unable to find himself in a genuinely good film - flop after flop, bad review after bad review. So what's going on? With the recent release of sci-fi thriller Transcendence, which has been panned across the board, it's just another misfire to add to Depp's increasingly muddled filmography. His performance as Dr. Will Caster has been branded "catatonic" and "sleepy" (which at least makes a change, given the intensity to which he plays some of his more heavily costumed characters). So what's the problem? Why can't Johnny Depp seem to find projects that suit him? At what point did it all start going wrong? Has his obvious penchant for "dressing up" caused us all to lose interest? Or perhaps you think otherwise; that Depp hasn't lost it at all, and the notions of him doing so have been greatly over exaggerated. Despite the fact that his post-Pirates ventures have consisted of several awful Tim Burton movies, lots of bad sequels, and questionable projects like The Tourist and The Rum Diary, we do have to remember that before Pirates, Johnny Depp was making bad movies, too: Nick of Time, From Hell, The Ninth Gate, The Astronaut's Wife, The Brave... all terrible films, and all made in a period of five years. Go figure. What do you think? At what point did Johnny Depp lose it? Did he ever have it in the first place? Has the whole "fall of Johnny Depp" thing been blown out of proportion?
