Captain Marvel's a tough one to gauge - the only two mainstream female-led superhero movies we've had in recent memory are Elektra and Catwoman, both of which were terrible films that performed equally as terribly. Given that Captain Marvel's a part of the MCU and there's a certain level of quality and box-office success that goes with that, there's no doubt it'll outperform those two. But by how much?

The character will be helped considerably by her debut in Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, before her own solo movie the following year, but it remains to be seen if she'll click with audiences in the same way Black Widow - or to a lesser extent, Scarlet Witch - both have.

Wonder Woman's performance in June next year will be a solid indicator of how much a female-led comic-book movie will fare in the current landscape, but for now, there's not much to go on.

So, using Ant-Man - Marvel's riskiest project in years - as a reference point, and raising that film's final figure ($519 million) to factor in Captain Marvel's probable box-office-boosting appearence in the next Avengers sequel, a $550 million worldwide gross definitely seems achievable.
