Predicting Summer 2016's Highest Grossing Movies

By Jack Pooley /

10. Suicide Squad

Box Office Prediction: $540 million Why It'll Be A Hit: Audiences can't get enough of The Joker, and the marketing has done a great job mounting the film as a darker, grittier Guardians of the Galaxy, a fun movie about a gang of iconic misfits raising hell. Plus, Will Smith's presence certainly won't harm its box office prospects, and coming hot off the heels of Batman v Superman's probable financial dominance, it'll have plenty of momentum going in. And Suicide Squad has pretty much the perfect release date: it doesn't have any serious, big-budget competition for basically the rest of the summer, which could allow it to have box office "legs" for several months. Why It Could Disappoint: Suicide Squad is an incredibly risky project, so the potential pitfalls are numerous: perhaps Jared Leto's screen time is too minimal, the movie has been mis-marketed and actually isn't very "fun" at all (a common complaint of DC movies to date), the link to Batman v Superman isn't explicit enough for casual audiences to realise they're part of the same world, or maybe Batman v Superman under-performs and has a knock-on effect to this film.
