Predicting The 20 Best Movies Of 2013

16. To the Wonder

Terrence Malick has long been one of the most reclusive and sporadic directors in the world, generally taking years if not decades between films. With To the Wonder however, Malick has only taken a two year break since his 2011 masterwork the Tree of Life. It will be interesting to see how Malick performs with such a relatively quick turnaround as its something he has never done before. Malick's films are among the most unique in existence for several reasons. First, he is an extremely visual director, creating arguably the most beautiful films ever made. Secondly, while not exactly abstract, his films generally defer plot and narrative in favor of emotion, visual cues, music, and themes covering God, life, existence, and others. Malick's unconventional style has earned him both rabid detractors and admirers but there's no denying that he makes some of the most unique films in modern movies. With To the Wonder, Malick creates another one of his divisive films with Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem, Olga Kurylenko, and Rachel McAdams. The advance screenings have not been particularly kind to the film but considering who the director is, the film will at least be a visual marvel if nothing else.
