Predicting The 8 Biggest Film Trends Of 2016

6. Continued Science-Fiction Dominance

Potentially Seen In: Independence Day: Resurgence, Star Trek Beyond, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Passengers 2015 was a fairly uneven year for the whole of science-fiction. For every Ex Machina, there was a Terminator Genisys, for every Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there was a Jupiter Ascending. It€™s natural for this range of success to exist when so many films are released in the same genre, and even if there was a lot of stinkers, some of the year€™s absolute best films were science-fiction. This year offers up a similar slate of sci-fi fare, from massive blockbusters to smaller personal dramas. Some will hit and some will miss, but look for 2016 to have a few elite-level hits that live up to 2015. For instance, there€™s no reason to believe that Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence€™s space-set romance couldn€™t capture audiences like The Martian did this year. The real test will be if the genre€™s blockbuster fare, like sequels to Independence Day and Star Trek, as well as the hotly-anticipated Star Wars spinoff Rogue One, can succeed in ways that bombs like Tomorrowland and Chappie couldn€™t.
