If Quentin Tarantino made GREMLINS was how Kevin Munroe pitched the tantalising titled War Monkeys, an adaptation of a Dark Horse Indie comic whose story about angry monkeys carrying automatic weaponary could only possibly work when stoned. A little like Gremlins then in actual fact; but you try and tell someone who is high that Gremlins isn't the greatest movie ever. Shock Till You Drop say Munroe (who recently directed a movie about talking turtles, hmmm) has dropped out of directing duties (he will now produce) and instead Kyle Newman, the director of the ill-fated Fanboys has taken the helm, a movie anyone living in the U.K. has still yet to see a single frame from. Although Shock say casting will begin next week, back in November we heard that Asian legend Sammo Hung was cast to play one of the two guys trapped down an underground faciility research base with militiary-trained Rhesus monkeys. Maybe he realised this movie wasn't going to work either. The monkeys will be a combination of real monkeys, animatronic puppets and CGI and just like Gremlins, it's set during the Christmas holiday. Newman is likely to also try and mix the horror/comedy tone of Gremlins into this piece. And that's five mentions to Gremlins (six now) for a movie that isn't a sequel to that franchise, for those keeping count.
