"Prometheus" begins rolling out in some European territories today with Belgium, France and Switzerland all getting the film early. Worldwide reactions and reviews will soon start to hit Twitter as the first screenings of the day begin in those locations. Meanwhile, the first batch of press reviews have started to hit the web. Our screening of the film here in the UK isn't until tonight so you will have to wait another few hours longer before you can read our review but until then, here's what others are saying about Ridley Scott's eagerly-awaited return to his "Alien" saga; Note: The verdict is far from overly positive and the reaction so far has been decidedly mixed; Variety's Justin Chang says;
"Ridley Scott's first sci-fier in three decades since Blade Runner remains earthbound in narrative terms, forever hinting at the existence of a higher intelligence without evincing much of its own" ... "Yet a key difference between this film and its predecessor is one of volume. Incongruously backed by an orchestral surge of a score, the film conspicuously lacks the long, drawn-out silences and sense of menace in close quarters that made Alien so elegantly unnerving. Prometheus is one chatty vessel, populated by stock wise-guy types who spout tired one-liners when they're not either cynically debunking or earnestly defending belief in a superior power.
The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy;
"A visually stunning return to science-fiction by Ridley Scott caters too much to audience expectations when more imaginative boldness would have taken it further."
Screen Daily's Mark Adams;
"It has been three decades since Ridley Scott last dipped his directorial toe in science-fiction territory (with 1982€™s Blade Runner), but with his fantasy epic Prometheus it is clear his striking sense of vision, drama and excitement fits perfectly with the genre and he has delivered a film that is already one of the most anticipated titles of the summer and should thrill, challenge and provoke audiences ready for his signature brand of intelligent and visceral film-making."
AP Galaxy are currently doing a fantastic job of collating reviews from France and beyond and currently count the reviews verdict like this;
28 out of 36 reviews are overall positive. The film currently holds a 78% fresh score with a 6.7 average rating. The rating is calculated on a base-5 rule along with unrated reviews (positive considered a 100%, mixed negative a 40%, mixed positive a 60%, and negative a 0%).
Our review of Prometheus follows tonight! The film is due Friday June 1st in the UK and June 8th in the US.
