QUANTUM OF SOLACE sets new records, ZACK AND MIRI make a flop!
Conflicting box office results for the two biggest releases of the weekend, one which is ruling the competition in the U.K. and one that is struggling in the U.S. First... QUANTUM OF SOLACE which opened exclusively on Friday in the U.K. (no Thursday night advanced screenings) grossed $8 million (£4.94 million) on it's first day of release. This beats out HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE ($6.5 million) to become the biggest ever opening day gross in this country. Previously, CASINO ROYALE grossed $4.7 million, so these totals just go to show how much love for that first movie has led to this huge sequel. And of course it's terrific advertising campaign which has seen several notable special t.v. appearances over the last fortnight, posters on virtually every bus in this country and it literally took over Radio 1 this week. QUANTUM OF SOLACE opens in two weeks time in the U.S Speaking of the U.S.... Kevin Smith's biggest budget movie to date ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO opened to just $2.3 million on Friday and according to Fantasy Mogul's Steve Mason won't hit higher than $7 million for the weekend.
