3. Gunsmoke & Bonanza

Tarantino spoke a lot about his fascination with Gunsmoke and Bonanza as a child and he has referenced both in names of his characters. Jackson's Marquis Warren is named after Charles Marquis Warren, the writer of Gunsmoke, and Daisy Domergue is a nod to actress Faith Domergue who played a small role in Bonanza and frequently appeared in classic Western movies. The name of Chris Mannix is also said to reference the TV show Mannix.

2. Hicox

A Band Apart

As the plot unravels, Tim Roth's Oswaldo Mobray (another of Roth's duplicitous characters not being who he seems) reveals that there's a bounty on his head, but that it's under his outlaw name: English Pete Hicox. That follows Tarantino's quirk for reusing names and linking families across films; Pete Hicox is clearly an ancestor of Michael Fassbender's Archie Hicox from Inglourious Basterds.

1. Red Apple Cigarettes

Miramax Films

Though the cigarettes themselves aren't mentioned, their obvious precursor - Red Apple Tobacco - is mentioned. In the flash-back sequence featuring Minnie, she says that she uses the brand when Jody asks her to roll him a cigarette. Bob the Mexican meanwhile smokes "Manzana Roja" - Spanish for Red Apple.
