Speaking of Warner Bros. and artists, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk may not have been a tentpole smash hit on the level of his Dark Knight films or Inception, but it's still made its $100 million budget back almost four-fold, which for a war movie is pretty damn grand.

What it lacks in well-developed characters it more than compensates for with its extremely economic pacing and run-time, gorgeous visuals, incredible sound, Hans Zimmer's pulsing musical score, and strong performances across the board.

There's never been a war movie quite like this, driven by its ingenious structure and visceral tone, so effective that you'll probably not even notice that it's only a PG-13.

It's certainly not among Nolan's very best works, but it is a singular effort and one of the most unique war movies in recent memory.
