It may not live up to the brilliance of Ghost Protocol, but Rogue Nation is still a solid entry into the impossibly long-standing M:I franchise. Yes, the plot is generic, the villain is just OK and the series' treatment of women continues to be rather suspect, but as a thrilling reminder of Tom Cruise's enthusiastic bada**ery? It totally works. It's a terrifically slick, frequently thrilling entertainment that benefits hugely from the addition of the lovely Rebecca Ferguson to the cast as a wily, seductive double agent, as well as Simon Pegg's slight upgrade from comedy sidekick to someone with a little more, well, agency. Still, it's Cruise who holds everything together at front and centre, reaffirming his own joy for practical action sequences as well as the audience's. With rapturous, slightly over-enthusiastic reviews and a strong box office performance so far, it seems that a sixth M:I film will be with us before we know it.
