3. Batman Returns
A gang of circus-themed minions is creating chaos in Gotham. The Bat signal is switched on, leading to a magnificent shot of Bruce Wayne standing up as he sees the signal. The Batmobile arrives in Gotham and fires everything its got to stop the bad guys from doing what they are doing. When Batman sees a clown harassing a woman (Selina Kyle), he gets out of his Batmobile to take care of it. With little effort and with no words, Batman takes care of the clown and leaves.
Penguin’s circus gang is the most delightedly ghoulish imagery of chaos ever conceived, we are glad to see Batman return the balance of order. The real star of the show is the Batmobile. We get excited about what the Batmobile will do next every time Batman pushes a button, and it never disappoints. No other Batmobile can beat the features the Burton Batmobile can unleash, and sometimes it is as simple as protruding side shin-breakers.
The other star is, of course, Batman himself. Michael Keaton’s Batman has a presence and confidence that is so thrilling the way no character ever has. When he enters the room, the fight is already over and he knows it; he just hasn’t done it yet. So, every time he pauses and looks at his enemies with a glare, we are in prime anticipation of what he is about to do. He never has to do anything; he just has to walk slowly and say nothing.
