Titanic will forever be historically important as cinema's first ever billion dollar movie, and were it not for Avatar, it would still be sitting at the top of the global box office rankings now.
The film was a marketing juggernaut that caught the attention and affections of a huge audience thanks in part to Leonardo DiCaprio's fresh-faced beauty, the chemistry he shared with Kate Winslett, the historical importance of the story and Celine Dion's pipes.
Looking at it a little more objectively now, it's too long, the performances are only really okay and the plots around the disaster are a little uninspiring. But the production design is incredible, the central pair are infinitely watchable and the disaster sequence is thrilling. It probably didn't deserve as many Oscars, but it in no way deserves the fashionable hate it gets these days
