Star Wars: The Force Awakens really needed to be a big win. Disney had spent an absolute fortune buying LucasFilm and hiring JJ Abrams was a strangely divisive decision on the back of their newly unveiled plans for a new Star Wars trilogy (at least).
But Abrams used The Force Awakens not only to introduce a new generation of characters (and grip a new generation of fans), but also to show his own love for the Star Wars universe. As the old adage goes, Star Wars rhymes, and The Force Awakens is as much a love letter to the Original Trilogy (and A New Hope in particular) as it is something new.
And boy was it a good decision to try and capture that marriage. The film went on to justify Disney's faith and has kicked off a whole new world of Star Wars films.
