15. Bruce Almighty (2003)

Jim Carrey gets given the power of God (Morgan Freeman) for a week - hilarity ensues.

Bruce Almighty could certainly take its fantastic premise much further, but held aloft by Carrey's electrifying performance and a strong supporting cast - namely a perfectly-cast Freeman, Jennifer Aniston, and a scene-stealing Steve Carell - it's a damn delight.

It doesn't offer many surprises in the dramatic department, but maintains a constant comedic clip throughout. The less said about the Carell-starring sequel Evan Almighty, though, the better.

14. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Though Ron Howard catches plenty of flak for being a workmanlike hired gun, this utterly deranged Dr. Seuss adaptation is perhaps the most persuasive evidence to the contrary.

Much of the heavy lifting is, admittedly, done by the fantastic below-the-line work, which does such a remarkable job of making Whoville feel real, and also disguising Carrey under a layer of green prosthetics and fur.

Its deeply weird, even unsettling tone perhaps makes it more suited for adults than kids, but a bland, also-ran family film this absolutely isn't - it takes risks, and Carrey is spectacular in it.
