Ranking Every New Movie Trailer From This Past Week
12. Mortal Engines
Maybe in a week less populated by great trailers, Mortal Engines' trailer could have snuck by. But not this week.
The trailer for the upcoming Peter Jackson-produced post-apocalyptic epic felt like an adaption of a YA book in all the wrong ways. The central plot revolving around Hester's mother leaving behind the MacGuffin and for only her to have the appropriate knowledge to take down the ruling powers feels like an amalgamation of several different tropes that have been done to death by franchises like Hunger Games or Divergent.
Not to mention that the trailer essentially gives an outline of the entire plot. Whereas the initial teaser that was released in December did a solid job of selling the Mad Max-ish tone and setting without revealing any plot, this trailer goes the complete opposite direction. Aside from teasing some clunky-looking action beats, it reveals that Hester and Tom will be exiled together, team up with a resistance, and then infiltrate London in the third act to try and stop Hugo Weaving's dastardly Valentine.
It's a trailer that reveals way too much and leaves way too little of an impression.
