Box Office: Made for a moderate $30 million, Gerard Butler's new heist thriller has grossed a not-bad $60 million so far, opening considerably above initial box office projections. It's apparently enough of a success that a sequel has already been given the greenlight.
Verdict: Though wildly overlong at 140 minutes and fundamentally ridiculous, Den of Thieves is a competent, Heat-esque romp, propelled by Gerard Butler's outrageously entertaining lead performance and Christian Gudegast's visually accomplished direction.
If you think about it too hard it all falls apart and there are several subplots that probably should've been left on the cutting room floor, but it's at least better than the bargain basement thriller most were probably expecting.
