Though more of an adventure yarn than a straight-up action film, Rob Roy is a riveting historical dramatic thriller starring Neeson as the iconic titular figure from the 1700s. When a deal that would make his people rich is derailed by scheming British aristocrat Archibald Cunningham (Tim Roth, who was Oscar-nominated for his role), Rob must defend his friends and family to ensure their way of life is preserved. Surprisingly mature for what could have been a disposably entertaining adventure film, Rob Roy serves up ripe dramatic material for Neeson, Roth and Jessica Lange (who plays Neeson's wife), and while not as action-heavy as most entries on this list, features a thrilling climactic sword-fight in which it's never clear which man might come out on top. Neeson could have tried much harder as far as his accent goes, but in terms of playing a hero easy to root for, he does a splendid job here as a noble a**-kicker.
