RottenTomatoes Score: 12% (4.3/10 average) Box Office: Pulling just $7.1 million so far against its $40 million budget, it's safe to say that The Gunman won't be raking in Taken money, nor kick-starting a similar run of lucrative movies for Sean Penn. This one has no chance of breaking even worldwide: a total bust. The Verdict: Sean Penn proves one thing here beyond doubt: the dude can get absolutely ripped for a role despite being in his mid-50s. Nobody can argue with the man's physical conditioning, but his choice in movies? Not so much. Penn also co-wrote and produced this hilariously naff sub-Taken dramatic thriller, full of preachy political messages (surprise, surprise) and a depressing lack of action. The only interesting thing going on is Javier Bardem's Shatner-like supporting performance, while the likes of Idris Elba and Ray Winstone just barely show up long enough to earn their place on the credits. Penn's a hot-and-cold actor at the best of times, but given the movie's abject bombing, there won't be another on-the-nose action flick from the humanitarian performer for quite some time.
