Box Office: Another modest, low-budget success from the Blumhouse stable, The Darkness cost just $4 million and has grossed more than $10 million to date.

Verdict: The latest horror vehicle from Wolf Creek's Greg McLean is a depressingly cliched PG-13 snooze-fest, trotting out just about every genre trope in the book while utterly wasting leads Radha Mitchell and Kevin Bacon.

Only the youngest, meekest audiences need apply, as everyone else will get fed up with the recycled jump scares and excessive exposition by the half-hour mark.

That any major star could be attracted to this project is utterly mind-bogging, as they clearly didn't even get a fat payday out of it. Not only May's worst, but one of the year's most execrable theatrical releases to date.
