Summer blockbuster season has been in full swing for a little while now, and this past month has seen Hollywood unveil some of the year's biggest movies, be they $250 million swashbuckling adventure movies or, as is becoming increasingly common in nostalgia-obsessed Tinseltown, desperate attempts to re-imagine long-dormant properties.

It hasn't exactly been the best month for tentpoles from a critical perspective, and most of May's better movies actually tended to be smaller efforts from the art-house arena. Some bloated, over-budgeted flops have been a joy for jaded fans to watch crash and burn, while others felt like a legitimately raw deal for the artists involved.

Still, Hollywood won't spend much time mourning these failures, what with June serving up the highly-anticipated likes of Wonder Woman, The Mummy, Transformers: The Last Knight, Baby Driver and Despicable Me 3...

16. Spark

Open Road Films

RottenTomatoes Score: 6% (3.8/10 average score)

Box Office: Even with its evidently low budget, this animated romp hasn't even pulled in $200,000 worldwide to date. A bust.

Verdict: Spark wastes a talented voice cast, including the likes of Patrick Stewart, Jessica Biel, Hilary Swank and Susan Sarandon, on a deathly dull monkeys-in-space narrative that's left wanting both laughs and smarts, while also lacking the visually compelling animation which might makes its dearth of charm a little more tolerable.

This shouldn't be at all surprising considering it comes from the producer of The Nut Job, but still, this is yet another contribution to the growing pile of theatrically-released animated movies that really should've gone straight to streaming.
