Box Office: Even with the presence of Saoirse Ronan, Booker Prize-nominated source material and an evidently low budget, the Ian McEwan adaptation hasn't made a dent, netting only $575,000 so far on limited release.

Verdict: Your tolerance for quaint melodrama - and your love for Saoirse Ronan - will largely determine how much you enjoy this sumptuous film about a young couple's marriage that's effectively derailed through a lack of sex.

Though it doesn't really say anything new or crowbar open a tantalising conversation on the subject, it is at least an atypical stab at seemingly familiar period romance, with Ronan typically delivering alongside capable co-star Billy Howle.

It's trying a little too hard to make you cry, though, and you might find yourself thinking that Ronan's a bit above such weepie contrivances. A mixed bag, but certainly more good than bad.
