Box Office: The Oscar hopeful sports biopic was made for a modest $25 million considering the stars involved, though after being on U.S. release for over two months, it still hasn't made its budget back. Its huge box office under-performance might also kill Emma Stone's chances at a Best Actress nod.
Verdict: A thoroughly entertaining document of the famous 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, Battle of the Sexes may play its subject matter fairly broadly, but it nevertheless does a rock solid job engaging with the social strictures of the time, while delivering an enjoyable mix of drama and light comedy.
Whether you're into tennis or not, there's a great human story of triumph at the film's core, with Stone and Steve Carell both giving it their all.
