Box Office: Paul Dano's low-budget directorial debut has cracked just $1.3 million worldwide, but given its ultra-limited release, it's clearly making most of its bank at home in a few months.

Verdict: A terrific debut for Paul Dano, Wildlife is a remarkable adaptation of Richard Ford's novel, teasing out some of the strongest and most understated performances of Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan's respective careers.

That's not to forget young Ed Oxenbould, who does a fine job playing their young son caught in the middle of a toxic, failing marriage.

While a little too subtle and low-key to court much Oscar buzz, make no mistake: Wildlife is one of the year's sharpest and most quietly affecting movies.
