Box Office: True to Illumination's successful formula, The Grinch was made for a sensibly modest budget of "only" $75 million, pretty much preventing any possibility of a bomb.

And while it's likely to end up the company's lowest-grossing film to date, the yuletide animation is nevertheless due to triple its budget imminently.

Not a stonking hit, but solid enough, if unlikely to pass the $345.1 million total of Jim Carrey's 2000 Grinch movie.

Verdict: A watchable yet totally forgettable offering from Illumination, The Grinch mostly squanders Benedict Cumberbatch's talents with a visually enticing yet thoroughly mediocre rendition of Dr. Seuss' classic tale.

While the Jim Carrey movie had a demented, subversive charm to it, everything here is purely superficial, and it'll likely appeal best to the very youngest, least discerning tots. The dog was cute, at least.
