Box Office: Despite the $23 million drama being adapted from a popular YA novel and generating awards buzz, it's still a few million shy of recouping its costs after four weeks at the box office. Yikes.

Verdict: It may get no points for subtlety and is undeniably beholden to the slushy pitfalls of its source material, but The Hate U Give is an extremely timely movie about the black experience in America, topped by a cracking lead performance from Amandla Stenberg.

Its 133-minute run-time is rather on the excessive side, but thanks to the sheer emotional power of its narrative, this drama mostly lands on the right side of righteous.
