Box Office: Propelled by immense Oscar buzz for Glenn Close's performance, The Wife has made $8.5 million on extremely limited release. It clearly didn't cost much and awards momentum should ensure it performs well on home video also. A solid art-house success if there ever was one.

Verdict: Glenn Close almost single-handedly props up this otherwise dead-average melodrama, with a fiery, perfectly-calibrated performance which just might scoop her that long-deserved Best Actress Oscar.

Visually and direction-wise it's pretty no-frills stuff, but the skilled ensemble provides strong support for Close, ensuring even those sillier third-act moments feel psychologically plausible.
