When fans got their first glimpse of Apocalypse - the lead villain in the upcoming X-Men movie - they were not exactly, shall we say, oozing with excitement, but thankfully the recent trailer, which gave a look at him in action (and toned down the purple colour scheme), has reignited anticipation for the character. After all, the X-Men versus such a fearsome foe - Apocalypse is immortal, the very first mutant and, of course, aided by Four Horsemen - will surely make for an explosive battle for the fate of the world. Who knows, he could even end up being the best X-Men movie villain yet. Although he would have some pretty stiff competition to that title; from man-hating mutants, to mutant-hating men to giant killer robots, there's been some pretty X-ceptional baddies on screen, although not without some that are pretty X-crable.
11. Deadpool
The X-Men films sadly have a solid track record for mishandling fan-favourites from the comics, be it making Cyclops a bland gooseberry or never giving Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde a chance to shine. The nadir of this, though, has to be the portrayal of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. For the most part of the film Ryan Reynolds makes for a great Wade Wilson - he has all the swagger and wisecracks of the comic character. However, in prepping him to be Wolverine's boss fight at the film's end, he is stripped of all potential and bizarrely turned into a mess of different mutants' powers. And that's without touching on how Fox thought the notion of taking away the mouth of someone known as 'the Merc with the Mouth' was a good idea. This isn't just a poor version of the character, but one that absolutely flies in the face of everything Deadpool is. Thankfully, Reynolds is back for another crack at the tongue in Deadpool in less than a month.
