18. Studio Interference - The Bride!

While there's nothing inherently surprising or insane about studio executives tinkering a filmmaker's vision into a chaotic mess, it does become an infuriating tactic when those in charge greenlit the script in the first place.

And in the case of Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride!, Warner Bros. signed off on Gyllenhaal's frankly bonkers Bride of Frankenstein reimagining, and even stumped up an eye-watering $100 million to make it happen.

But as was widely reported before the film's release and later confirmed by Gyllenhaal herself, The Bride! went through an exhaustive test screening process where the studio pushed back on some of the more graphically sexual and violent imagery, and also insisted upon additional voiceover to clarify the story.

Ultimately, why bankroll an auteur director's bold new project only to butcher it in post-production? While there's no guarantee Gyllenhaal's original cut would've been any better, at least it would've been her uncompromising vision from start to finish.

And with The Bride! tanking catastrophically at the box office, it seems highly unlikely that Warner Bros. will ever let Gyllenhaal release her own director's cut.
